7 best MoEngage alternativesfor customer engagement (2026)

Seven tools compared on the messages they cover, who on your team can run them, what an agent can do in them, ease of setup and pricing.

By , SuprSendOct 2, 2026

MoEngage is a customer engagement platform that consumer brands use to analyse user behaviour and run campaigns across push, email, SMS, WhatsApp and in-app messages.

Teams evaluating or already running MoEngage tend to look elsewhere when transactional, product and marketing messages need to run from one system, when their own customers need controls inside the product, or when engineers and agents need to change notifications from outside a campaign dashboard.

What MoEngage does

MoEngage is a customer engagement platform for consumer brands. It collects events and profile data from your app and website through its SDKs, turns them into segments and analytics, and uses them to run campaigns and multi-step journeys (Flows) across push, email, SMS, WhatsApp, in-app and on-site messages. Its site describes it as an agentic customer engagement platform used by more than 1,350 consumer brands.

It is sold as three products: Cross-Channel Marketing and Analytics (Growth and Enterprise plans), MoEngage Inform for transactional alerts, and MoEngage Personalize for website personalisation. Merlin AI adds agents for copy, creative and code, and custom agents marketers build within rules they set.

Where MoEngage is strong

  • Segmentation, identity resolution and computed traits sit next to campaigns, and the Customer Journey Analytics add-on puts funnels, retention cohorts and user paths in the same dashboard.
  • Flows builds multi-step journeys with control groups, conversion goals and path optimisation, and 1:1 Agentic Decisioning picks content, timing and channel per user.
  • Governance for a large marketing team: tag-based frequency capping across campaigns, DND windows, a global control group and a campaign approval workflow.
  • Merlin custom agents run on marketer-defined audiences, channels and budget limits, and keep an activity log of every step they take.
  • A long compliance list and six data centres suit regulated consumer brands in banking, insurance and telecom.

Why teams look elsewhere

  1. 01Transactional, product and marketing messages need to share one system. MoEngage sells transactional alerts as a separate product, Inform, billed by messages, while campaigns and journeys sit on Growth or Enterprise, billed by tracked users. A password reset and a win-back campaign end up in two products with two ways of paying, and someone has to know which one owns each message.
  2. 02Your customers need notification controls inside your product. MoEngage is built for a consumer brand talking to its own users. It separates brands by workspace and has no tenant object, so one account cannot give each of your customers its own sending domain, provider, templates and defaults. Its subscription categories cover email only; push and SMS have a per-channel opt-in. Content cards, its in-app feed, is an add-on on both plans.
  3. 03You want to pay for what you send. A monthly tracked user is any profile with at least one session or event in a calendar month, whether or not you message them. An app with 200,000 monthly actives that sends 30,000 notifications is billed on 200,000 users, and email, WhatsApp, cards and Inform volume are billed on top. G2 reviewers name cost as a recurring complaint.
  4. 04You want to start on a free plan and see a price before a sales call. MoEngage's pricing page lists Growth and Enterprise with a "Let's Talk" button and no published prices. Its G2 profile still shows a free Starter plan for up to 10,000 tracked users, so ask sales whether it is still offered. SuprSend's pricing is published: free up to 10,000 notifications a month, then self-serve paid plans.
  5. 05Engineers and agents need to change notifications from the repo or an agent. MoEngage's hosted MCP server lists nine read-only tools: search email, push and SMS campaigns, and read performance, content and delivery diagnostics. Outside the dashboard, the Campaigns API creates push and email campaigns and the Flows API reads a Flow and changes its status. MoEngage has no command-line tool, and its live and test environments are edited separately. A team that wants changes reviewed in a pull request, promoted from staging to production, or made by its own agent in Cursor needs more write access than that.
  6. 06You need to go live in weeks. G2 reviewers report an average of two months to go live on MoEngage and 14 months to see a return. The work is an SDK rollout on every app and site, an event tracking plan, user imports and onboarding. That is a lot for a team that needs product notifications this quarter.

How we compared these tools

We read each tool’s documentation, API reference, pricing page, trust or security page and G2 reviews, and checked what each vendor’s MCP server and agents can do. For MoEngage itself we also drew on our line-by-line comparison of the two products, 114 items across 14 areas. What we compared on: feature depth, use cases covered, billing model, developer experience, AI authoring, and ease of use for technical and non-technical team members.

Three different kinds of product get called “MoEngage alternatives,” and they solve different problems.

Layer 1: Delivery providers

FCM and APNs deliver push, Twilio and its peers deliver SMS and WhatsApp, and SES, SendGrid and Postmark deliver email. Everyone on this list pays one of these, either inside the platform’s price or on a separate bill. None of them decides who gets what, when, or on which channel.

Layer 2: Unified notification platforms

SuprSend and Knock sit here. Your product triggers them from code, and they run the workflow: which channel, in what order, after what delay, respecting which preference, with a log of every step. Both cover transactional and marketing messages, and both can be run from outside the dashboard through a CLI and an MCP server. The difference is what the agent can operate end to end: in SuprSend, an agent builds and changes workflows, templates and tenants, tests and sends, and reads the delivery log.

Layer 3: Customer engagement platforms

MoEngage, CleverTap, Braze, Iterable, Customer.io and OneSignal sit here. They are built for campaigns and journeys at consumer scale, with segmentation and analytics next to the canvas. Their agents mostly read data and help a marketer inside the campaign canvas. Product notifications, an embeddable inbox your customers control and per-customer setups are usually left to you.

1.SuprSendSuprSend

Best for running transactional, product and engagement notifications from one platform, with engineering, product, growth and their agents all working in it

SuprSend's architecture: your API calls, SDKs, CDPs and data warehouses feed workflows, preferences, templates and observability, which send through email, SMS, WhatsApp, push, Slack and Microsoft Teams providers and the in-app inbox

What SuprSend is

SuprSend is a US company, founded in 2022, that runs every notification a product sends from one platform, from transactional alerts to engagement campaigns. Engineering, product and growth teams work in it alongside their agents.

A complete orchestration engine

WorkflowsA workflow engine with branches, conditions, delays, throttling, data fetch and webhook steps, and sends in each user's timezone. One send step reaches the user's channels in your order. Built visually, through the CLI or by an agent, with version history and rollback. Builder on every plan; throttling, fetch, webhook and timezone from Essentials.
In-app inboxReal-time bell and feed, read state synced across devices, tabs, toasts, per-tenant feeds and six client SDKs, embedded or headless. Every plan, Free included.
User preferencesUsers opt in or out per category and channel, in a preference centre you embed or host. Business.
Per-tenant setupsEach of your customers gets its own branding, templates, preferences and provider routing. Business add-on, Enterprise.
TemplatingEditors for every channel, variants by tenant, user or language, version history with rollback, translation files. Every plan; translation files on Business.
Batching and digestsCollect events over a window and send one message, at a time the user picks. Business.
ObservabilityStep-by-step workflow logs and message logs with the provider's error; 30 days on Free, 90 on paid plans; warehouse sync on Business.
Retries and fallbackBring your own providers; if one does not confirm delivery, the next one sends. Essentials.
DeploymentSuprSend cloud with 99.9% uptime, or your own VPC, on-prem or bring your own cloud with vendor support; SOC 2 Type II, ISO 27001, GDPR, HIPAA, CPRA. Self-hosted and BYOC on Enterprise.

How your team operates it

In the dashboard

The SuprSend agent builds a workflow from a description, drafts the copy for each channel and traces why a send failed. Product and growth work here and in Slack.

In your own agent

Connect the SuprSend MCP server to Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor or any MCP client and build and change workflows, templates and tenants, test and send, and read the delivery log and analytics from there.

In your IDE or codebase

The SuprSend CLI pushes and pulls workflows, templates, schemas and translation files, promotes staging to production and generates TypeScript types, so a bulk change is one command reviewed in a pull request.

Pricing. Free up to 10,000 notifications a month. Essentials starts at $100 a month for 50,000, then $2 per 1,000. Business starts at $250 a month for 50,000, then $5 per 1,000. Enterprise is custom.

Verdict. Choose SuprSend if your product's alerts, in-app inbox, digests and campaigns should run from one engine that engineers, marketers and agents can all change. Choose MoEngage if the job is behavioural analytics and consumer marketing at a scale of tens of millions of users, where journey depth and predictive targeting decide the value. 2.CleverTap

Best for consumer app teams that want MoEngage's kind of platform with self-serve entry pricing

CleverTap's homepage: live 1:1 personalization with CleverAI, and cards for events, product launches and case studies

CleverTap is the closest like-for-like answer to MoEngage. Both serve consumer apps and put analytics, segmentation and journeys in one product, and CleverTap’s data model and pricing are built around the monthly active user.

Where it goes deep. Funnels, cohorts and pivots sit next to the campaign tools, so a growth manager can find a drop-off and target it in the same session. Journeys branch across push, in-app, email, SMS, WhatsApp and web push. CleverTap publishes self-serve Essentials tiers by MAU with a 30-day trial; Advanced and Cutting Edge are quoted.

Its MCP server, in early access, connects Claude, ChatGPT and Cursor to the account. The docs say only admin access is supported for now, without role-based access, PII handling or Teams.

Where it stops. CleverTap is a marketing and retention platform. Transactional workflows triggered from your backend, a preference centre your customers’ admins control and per-customer branding are yours to build around it. Its G2 setup score is 8.5, and advanced use takes training.

Pick it if you are replacing MoEngage with another consumer engagement platform and want a published starting price and a trial.

Verdict. CleverTap does the same job as MoEngage for the same kind of company, with a lower self-serve entry point. Choose it when the reason to leave MoEngage is price or fit with your account team, and the job itself stays consumer marketing.

3.Braze

Best for enterprise lifecycle teams running complex journeys on warehouse data

Braze's homepage: a customer engagement platform for marketers, with a loyalty push notification on a phone

Braze began as Appboy in 2011 and is the engagement platform most large consumer brands shortlist against MoEngage.

Where it goes deep. Canvas journeys support experiment paths, decision splits, agent steps and version history. SQL Segment Extensions build audiences straight from warehouse data, and Currents streams engagement events back out. Channels include WhatsApp, LINE and KakaoTalk, plus Content Cards and Banners for in-app. BrazeAI Operator works in the dashboard, and the remote MCP server reads analytics and creates templates and content blocks.

Where it stops. Contracts are quoted, and billing counts data points on profile updates, custom events and sessions. Braze’s own stated average time to value is six weeks. Its docs list no CLI.

Pick it if you are an enterprise marketing team moving up from MoEngage and need the deepest journey and experimentation tooling.

Verdict. Braze is the step up for marketing depth at enterprise scale. It stays a marketing platform, so product notifications still need their own plan.

4.Iterable

Best for marketing teams that want AI decisioning and an agent with write access over MCP

Where it goes deep. Iterable runs cross-channel journeys across email, SMS, push and in-app, and bundles its AI under the Nova name: an agent, predictive audiences, and send-time and channel decisioning. Its open-source MCP server connects Cursor, Claude Code and Claude Desktop to the platform with controlled read and write actions, so an agent can help build and adjust campaigns.

Where it stops. Pricing is quote-only with annual commitments and no free tier. G2 rates its setup at 7.7, and journeys and campaigns are still marketer-owned objects.

Pick it if you want a mature marketing platform whose agent can act on campaigns from your own AI tools.

Verdict. Iterable is the engagement platform most open to outside agents today. It fits marketing teams; product notifications stay a separate problem.

5.Customer.io

Best for software companies that trigger lifecycle messages from product events

Customer.io's dashboard: a campaign goal report with conversions over time, attribution by message, and the agent panel

Where it goes deep. Customer.io started with email and built its journeys around events your product sends, so behaviour-triggered onboarding and retention flows are its home ground. Its MCP server and CLI act under the signed-in user’s role, with writes held for approval where the client supports it, and the in-product agent drafts messages.

Where it stops. Billing counts profiles, people and objects, whether or not you message them. It has no free plan, and Premium is billed yearly.

Pick it if you are a software company whose marketers want event-driven lifecycle campaigns with a published starting price.

Verdict. Customer.io is the most developer-friendly engagement platform on this list. It suits lifecycle marketing for software products better than consumer campaigns at MoEngage's scale.

6.Knock

Best for engineering teams that want product notifications and in-product guides from one developer platform

Knock's homepage, with its agent building an onboarding workflow: a trigger, welcome email, 24-hour delay, agent step and a branch for managers and ICs

Where it goes deep. Knock runs workflows your code triggers across email, SMS, push, WhatsApp, chat apps and an in-app feed, with client SDKs for React, JavaScript, Angular, React Native, Expo, iOS, Android and Flutter, and eight backend SDKs. Agents run in the dashboard, Slack, Claude, Cursor, ChatGPT and Codex, backed by an MCP server and CLI. Guides add in-product banners and modals.

Where it stops. It is cloud only. Per-customer branding and preferences, translations, custom roles, SAML, SCIM and warehouse sync sit on Enterprise.

Pick it if your notifications live in the product and your engineers own them.

Verdict. Knock is a strong developer platform for product messaging. Teams coming from MoEngage will find far less segmentation and analytics than they had.

7.OneSignal

Best for app teams whose main channel is mobile push

OneSignal's homepage: lifecycle marketing campaigns with a delivered and click-through-rate chart and an email preview

Where it goes deep. OneSignal started with push and added email, SMS and in-app messages. Mobile push, in-app and Live Activities are free up to 1,000 MAU, and journeys branch across push, email, SMS and in-app. Its AI agent and MCP server are on every plan and work with users, segments, templates, sends and exports.

Where it stops. OneSignal has no WhatsApp channel and keeps no stored per-user message history, so there is no lasting in-app feed. Preferences are push categories. Active journeys are capped below Enterprise.

Pick it if push is most of your volume and you want to start small.

Verdict. OneSignal is the easy, low-cost start for push-led apps. It covers a narrower slice of what MoEngage does.

When you should stay on MoEngage

  • Your growth team's job is consumer campaigns and journeys to a large audience, and your app sends few product notifications of its own.
  • Your segments, Flows and dashboards are built around MoEngage data, and your marketers would lose months rebuilding them elsewhere.
  • Your marketing plan depends on on-site messages for anonymous visitors, iOS Live Activities, RCS, or Facebook and Google audience sync.
  • Your security reviews and data-residency sign-offs already cover MoEngage, and reopening them would delay other work.
  • You sell to consumers under one brand, so no business customer needs its own admin controls inside your product.

The real cost shows up in the code teams write around MoEngage: routing logic that decides whether a message goes through Inform or a campaign, a workspace per brand with scripts copying templates between them, an in-app feed and preference screens built in-house, and manual steps to move changes from test to live. That code is a hidden cost: your team builds it, maintains it, and pays for it in engineering time on top of MoEngage’s price. When that work keeps growing because notifications have become part of the product, it is time to move them to one platform.

How to migrate off MoEngage

  1. 01Record baselines. Export delivery, open and click rates per channel and per campaign type for the last 90 days, so you can compare after the switch.
  2. 02Rebuild workflows. Map each Flow, campaign and Inform alert to a workflow. Build them in the new platform's editor or push them as files through its CLI so they sit in your repo.
  3. 03Move tokens and subscribers. Export user profiles, push tokens, email addresses and phone numbers, and import them before you remove the MoEngage SDKs.
  4. 04Carry consent state. Move unsubscribes, channel opt-outs and category preferences first. A single missed opt-out costs more than the migration saves.
  5. 05Rebuild the inbox. If you use content cards, replace them with the new in-app feed and decide whether old cards carry over or expire.
  6. 06Dual-send. Run a small share of traffic through both systems for a week or two and compare delivery against your baselines.
  7. 07Keep the old system 30 days. Leave MoEngage in read-only use for a month, for audits, support questions and anything the migration missed.

Conclusion

MoEngage covers consumer engagement end to end: analytics, segmentation, journeys across more than ten channels, AI agents for marketers, and transactional alerts through a separate product. For a consumer brand whose growth team lives in campaigns, it does that job well.

Move when notifications become part of your product. If you need every kind of message in one system, a complete orchestration engine behind it, and a platform your engineers, product and growth teams and their agents can all operate, SuprSend covers that, and its free plan lets you prove it on 10,000 notifications a month before you commit.

FAQ

Is MoEngage free?

MoEngage's pricing page lists two quoted plans, Growth and Enterprise, billed by monthly tracked users, plus separately quoted products and add-ons. Its G2 profile still shows a free Starter plan for up to 10,000 tracked users, so ask MoEngage's sales team whether it is still offered. Growth is listed on AWS Marketplace at $750 a month with up to 25,000 tracked users.

What is the cheapest MoEngage alternative?

Take 50,000 notifications a month to 20,000 active users. Free plans: SuprSend and Knock include 10,000 a month; OneSignal gives push and in-app free up to 1,000 MAU. First paid plans: SuprSend Essentials is $100 for 50,000 notifications, Knock Starter is $250 for 50,000 messages, and CleverTap Essentials is $250 for up to 20,000 MAU. Overage: SuprSend charges $2 per 1,000 on Essentials and $5 on Business; Knock charges $5. CleverTap, OneSignal, Customer.io and MoEngage bill on users or profiles, a different unit, so their cost follows audience size instead of send volume.

Which MoEngage alternatives include an in-app inbox?

SuprSend and Knock ship an in-app feed with client SDKs on every plan; SuprSend adds per-tenant feeds, tabs and synced read state. CleverTap has an app inbox, Braze has Content Cards, and MoEngage sells content cards as an add-on. OneSignal has no lasting feed.

Which alternatives have an MCP server or agent authoring?

All seven have an MCP server or agent; what differs is what the agent can do. In SuprSend, the agent and any MCP client build and change workflows, templates and tenants, test and send, and query logs and analytics. Knock and Iterable offer write actions. Customer.io holds writes for approval. Braze's server creates templates and reads analytics. CleverTap's is in early access. MoEngage's hosted server has nine read-only tools.

Can one platform handle transactional and marketing notifications?

Yes. SuprSend runs transactional alerts, product notifications and marketing broadcasts through the same workflows, users, preferences, unsubscribes and logs. Knock also positions itself as unified. MoEngage covers both but splits them across two products, Inform for transactional alerts and Growth or Enterprise for campaigns.

Which channels do these alternatives support?

SuprSend covers email, SMS, WhatsApp, mobile push, web push, Slack, Microsoft Teams, in-app and webhooks on every plan. The engagement platforms cover push, email, SMS and in-app, with WhatsApp on MoEngage, CleverTap and Braze, and LINE and KakaoTalk on Braze. OneSignal has no WhatsApp channel.

Which alternatives meet SOC 2, GDPR and HIPAA?

SuprSend holds SOC 2 Type II, ISO 27001, GDPR, HIPAA and CPRA, with a HIPAA BAA on Enterprise. MoEngage lists SOC 2 Type 2, ISO 27001, ISO 27701, ISO 22301, CSA STAR Level 2, GDPR, CCPA and HIPAA. Knock offers a HIPAA BAA on Enterprise. Check each vendor's trust page for the certificate dates and which plan carries a BAA.

Can I self-host a MoEngage alternative?

SuprSend runs in your own VPC, on-prem or as bring your own cloud under an Enterprise licence, with vendor support. The other six tools on this list are cloud only. Novu, outside this list, is open source and free to self-host if you run it yourself.

Do I still pay email and SMS providers?

Usually, yes. With SuprSend and Knock you connect your own providers, such as SES, SendGrid or Twilio, and pay them directly; SuprSend can fall back to a second provider when the first does not confirm delivery. Engagement platforms such as MoEngage include email sending in the subscription and bill volume on top, while SMS and WhatsApp generally run through a provider account.
